Noxsoma Chronicles Episode #27: New Design New Location

The late Dr. Wayne Dyer once said something about Just Going.
"Pick a direction and Go!" he said.
That's how I got here. Sort of.

design is not a strength of mine. It's a funny think [sic] I've just had; there are a lot of things I like that I'm not particularly good at. I might add "yet" to the end of that sentence because there are a lot of things I haven't really applied myself to.

Why?

What's become apparent to me is that proficiency in a discipline, kills the love for it. That's just me. It could be built into my DNA or it could be an excuse for being too lazy to actually become good; well, a little better than good, at anything.

Case in point. I love(d) taking pictures. Mind you, I've been taking pictures since the use of film, which granted, isn't a very long time ago. Nonetheless, it seemed I had an "eye" for it. I got good expressions out of people. In short, people enjoyed my photos.

After the military I went for proper photography classes, earned a degree, worked in the field for thirty-plus years. Around the turn of the 21st Century. I'd lost interest. I felt like I lost my eye and my creativity. I lost the patience to approach people and ask them to pose for me. This was around the time of the release of the "disposable" camera. It was the sight of such cameras in vending machines at a hospital where a friend was giving birth, that let me know that my career was essentially over.

It was a dramatic reaction, of course. And as I think back on it, the comment was rather tongue-in-cheek. Despite disposable cameras, the digital camera-phone revolution, the rise of social media and the banning of the chemicals required to process film and images on ecological grounds [pardon the pun], I worked (so to speak) as a photographer for an additional fifteen years.

I have friends who were ten year vets in the game by the time I ever picked up a 35mm camera, and they're still at it, professionally, however the golden age of the fashion photographer is over. Even the photo magazines, those I occasionally encounter are more tech-heavy than image full. It seems they build cameras so that no one can possibly take a "bad" image. Ironically however, the software comes with filters, which make what we'd accept as a "good" image look, well... bad.

It can be blurred, it can be made to look weathered, out of focus, torn and even partially exposed.

Anyway, I've gotten off the track.

Design. I'm not very good at it, but I like it. I don't want to delve deeply into the eras of design history or the slightest differences between serifs or loops or swirls on fonts. I just wanted to jazz up my blog a little bit.

So here it is... the new header for this series. I can imagine it might get boring seeing this is the thumbnail every time I post. I'll figure something out.

I don't imagine you've read this far. It's a rant. I'm prone to them. I like writing as well. Unlike photography I never tainted my writing with formal education. I do wonder... what if I'd studied journalism and learned photography simply by doing it?

Maybe next go 'round.
