"In the end what was implemented was totally different from what I drew"

in #design7 years ago

There is no more disappointing thing when I'm interviewing someone for a UX Design or UI Design spot than thatcomment.

The one who exonerates all guilt and pushes her to another team, another person, another country, another universe.

Usually comes after a compliment.

"Cool this interaction you created."

"Well ... It's a shame that the implementation was horrible. The developers did not follow anything we said, it got really hard to use. "

Take a deep breath.

If something was not implemented the way we imagine it, the fault lies with the designer as much as with any other member of the team.

Our role as designers is to design * easy-to-use * experiences , noteasy-to-use layouts .

One of these things happened halfway:

  • You did not follow all the stages of development and you were not there giving feedback and correcting as the code was written.
  • You drew an interaction that could not be implemented correctly on the platform / language of the final product - and did not find it in time to correct.
  • You did not document the interaction at the level of detail enough that developers would not get lost in the middle of the way.
  • You ignored developer concerns when they tried to warn you of the difficulty of implementing that.
  • You have not discussed enough with developers about creative ways to fix implementation issues or to simplify the interaction a bit.
  • You did not plan a plan B or C when you realized that the implementation would not look the way you imagined it.
  • You have not tried enough with users to realize that that interaction is not conventional enough (and if it's not conventional enough, it's hard for developers to have where to mirror to build the best possible code).
  • You did not break design responsibility enough with the development team to take the challenge for you and implement what they believed to be right - not simply follow what you told them to do.
  • You did not convince the team (or client) to release a 1.1 version of that page / interaction where the problem was corrected.

Sure, he's hired.
