Turning smog into DIAMONDS! How about that?!

in #design8 years ago (edited)

As most of the stories that I post do, this one also starts with the artist. And with his dream.

This time it's a Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde and his team, who have created an amazingly beautiful solution to the air pollution issue!

He was always concerned about the air quality and pollution, and the idea of this project stroke him when he was on his trip to Beijing.

On Saturday, I could see the world around me, the cars, the trees, the people. But on Wednesday it was completely covered in smog, with pollution, and that image made me a little bit sad.”

What he created was actually a tower that literally consumes the smog and turns it into the clean air and... Diamonds.

So how the hell did diamonds appear in this whole thing??

First, let's look at the project in a bit more details.

The Smog Free Tower uses patented ion technology to produce smog-free bubbles of public space, allowing people to breathe and experience clean air for free.

The tower is about 7m tall, it gets installed in public places where it actually sucks up polluted air, and cleans it at a nano-level.

Then the clean air is released back into parks and playgrounds. According to Roosegaarde, these areas are 70-75% cleaner than the rest of the city.

"We’ve created environments that none of us want, Roosegaarde said. Where children have to stay inside, and where the air around us is a health hazard."

And here comes the beautiful part!

The carbon from smog, which is about 32% in Beijing’s, under 30 minutes of pressure can be turned into diamonds.

And then, when the diamonds are sold, they will be used to finance future construction of Smog Towers!

This sounds like an utopian #dream... But isn't it just sooo beautiful?!

Have a great day, Steemit!

Sort:

That is, without a doubt, one of the coolest p things that I have ever seen! I want one!

It may seem beautiful but IMO it can lead to even greater pollution. Why?
It encourages emittents(such as huge factories) to send more pollutants such as carbon di-/oxide to the atmosphere, just to produce more carbon from which diamonds consist. Hence, higher amounts of sulfur and nitrogen oxides (and lots of other pollutants) would contaminate the environment (for example during "acid rain").

But why emittents should be interested in the higher production of these diamonds? They will be sold by the Smog Towers project and the benefits will be retained to finance other towers, so I don't see anyone else interested in the increased emissions..
