I appreciate your idea, but I really don't see a viable business model in this. The biggest cause of deforestation (at least in South America) is clearing land for livestock. Quite often they even use the slash and burn method, which is the cheapest way to clear a forest and it also makes the grass grow on much faster pace on top of the land.

I think you should look at sustainable economical forest management, which is used in all forests at least in Nordic countries. Finland and Sweden have the biggest biomass industries in Europe, yet their net forest growth has been positive almost the entire century! This I think is a viable solution, that would be greatly appreciated in developing countries where everyone benefits. The forests will be saved and there is still a profitable business in owning a forest.
What ECO should do is educate people in developing countries of sustainable forest management and try to connect investors in the biomass industry to local forest owners.

Great idea. The big hurdle to overcome, I think, would be that people might double-sell the land. They sell it to concerned environmentalists, but those people are scattered around the world, and with nobody to verify that the forest land is being treated properly.... You could have people who buy a bunch of forests, only to learn later that those forests have been destroyed.

I guess what I am trying to say is the ECO idea would need a strong element of continuous verification that proves the location and veracity of the protected area.

Really digg'n the design and it's great to see an artistic approach explained. Would also love to see potential app/design functionality in future posts! Would also love to hear your thoughts on the whole environmentalism debate as a Kiwi.
