The mainstream stuff you'd buy usually sucks and is probably overpriced

in #design6 years ago

This is something that is inspired by the "Pussy Riot" girls and some ideas they've voiced in an interview I heard the other day.

In reality whenever I meet the challenge of picking up some new clothes, the first place I go to are second hand shops. Not because of the price, no, but because of the stuff you can find there - unlike things that you would buy in most mainstream (look at what a hipster and rebel I am!) shops, second hand stuff quite often may actually have a personality. And don't get me wrong, there is good stuff out there too, not the majority of it though.

So, blah blah blah, if you don't want to read the entire post (as the point is to eventually get your input and for you to see what others think), please do scroll to the last part (next to the t-shirt picture).

I don't want to hate on brands and whatever, as that's not what I do, but you do probably feel the same way if you utilize some critical thinking when shopping for clothes, otherwise you might not be interested in what I will say below.

So the idea voiced in the interview I mentioned earlier went something like: I am buying overpriced "crap" that I don't quite like only because there's nothing better around.
That is true, in cases when you don't have exactly what you want, you would normally settle for the next best thing. The truth is that these days you don't necessarily have to "settle" for anything, because creating your own stuff is a lot more accessible than it used to be.
The stuff I am talking about is mainly shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and whatnot, which you can design in any way you like (taken that you actually want to). Other things like jackets, jeans and so on is a bigger challenge indeed, but if you are up for it, all the means to do so are available.
Shoes are even more challenging though and you would probably have to settle for what's out there unless you are willing to go a few extra miles.

The point I want to make here is that it would quite often cost less and give you much more satisfaction to get something that is "You" rather than just wandering around the shopping center and eventually buying something that's "meh".

I've had this idea in mind for a very long time, yet it never actually had enough momentum to grow into anything until now. I know that some people that are subscribed to me and the ones I am following (believe it or not, I actually read and watch your stuff) are designing their own stuff from time to time or at least have some ideas. So if you have any design ideas that are lingering somewhere deep down there or even better, have some experience in making your won stuff (for yourself or actually selling it somewhere), please share that with all of us! A big respect from me (at least) is guaranteed.

Also adding something of my own as a contribution to the conversation - this is a t-shirt idea that I had the other day, it's HOMM3 themed (as a large portion of what I write about is gaming related) and is sort of a minimalistic take at the fancy polo shirt designs (it would of course need a bit more refinement), feel free to hate on it.

Sort:

Hey, @emtecks. Remember me? I'm the @gamegiveaways guy. Yep, that account is still on a break.

Ideally we should all go to that new good brand on the market and keep telling them how great they are and how we hope they don't sell out because mainstream brands usually suck. Hopefully this will get them to not sell out once they're big enough to get offers.

There's always something great out there. Maybe it's being kickstarted through Indiegogo or Kickstarter. We should support those.

Yeah, true. I guess selling out plays indeed a big role in such things. Although that is sort of a relative thing, after all I don't know how big of a temptation in might be to swap your passion for $$$ :)
Regarding the new stuff, I feel like clothing start ups are best started locally wherever they are, online platforms would be useful for something at least semi-established

I don't shop for 2nd hand clothes much but...

There are some department stores that have quality stuff but it is typically overpriced. Way, way overpriced. However, such stores usually have several sales a year. One I go to has 65% off plus an additional 50% off sales at least twice a year on stuff they are clearing out. This tends to make way overpriced stuff quite reasonable.

I'm not much into expressing myself through fashion (barring the occasional t-shirt) so as long as its comfortable, relatively inexpensive, doesn't scream "Oh my god, I'm hideous!" to me and is of decent quality then I'm happy.

I don't think I care enough to spend time designing my own stuff but you are right about it being much more accessible these days. It's something that should definitely appeal to some people and there seems to be a lot of custom and semi-custom stuff out there these days.

Thanks! I've been lately having a lot of ideas on t-shirt designs and a little plan on how to get them distributed among people where I live, so I think I will be making a few posts about that in the near future
