From Small Scale To Life size (Hyperbolic Parabolas, Sustainability and Much More) #1
Being in a design field, you always get to hear terms like brainstorming, idea generation, concept development, projects, submissions, etc..
So one fine day we were approached by this project where we had to promote sustainability as an idea. Or in simple terms the theme was sustainability. Everybody had to contribute their ideas and then we would have discussions upon them and ultimately the 3 best ideas would get selected.
We spent a good day after developing the ideas, working in groups as the next day was meant for discussions. They were to be refined but as it turned out everything was dropped and we had to start from scratch....!
Okay Aishwarya. Keep Calm, I said to myself.
So, we formed groups again and this time me and my group wanted to experiment with parabolic and hyperbolic structures. And we figured that the following structure could be an entrance to any space as two independent structures. The material being bamboo and the joineries could be achieved by bamboo dowels rather than nut & bolts.
Sustainability..? - CHECKED.
The idea seemed to work for us but Enter ~ critiques. The form was completely changed (again) and by this time it kind of got annoying.
Sigh..
We felt a little confused as to where the project was heading and with so little time in hand. Nevertheless, after countless modifications and discussions we finally arrived at a final design which seemed to work in all aspects. Next was assembling of materials and then beginning with construction. ( Cont. in next part )
Here, the concept behind this form was to show the use of sustainable materials in the past which got reduced, but now the environmental concerns have forced people to reconsider more sustainable materials.

So this was the entire process of the model development for the installation which took about 3-4 days. It was a great learning experience and definitely helped me to understand how imagination and execution works. I will be uploading the construction process in the next part soon.
