Desertification

Desertification is a serious problem in India. The desert is spreading, partly because of the way. The land is managed by the local people. If there are too many people and too much livestock in an area, then the vegetation will not be able to support it all and if the monsoon fails, then the land becomes barren and plant life cannot grow. If there is not enough vegetation, then the desert takes over.

Caritas, India has run public information campaign trying to persuade local communities to take similar measures to stop desertification. As farmers witnessed the terrible effects of lack of water and soil erosion. They began to realize the urgency of the need to managed the water to build a lot of dams and gullies to create a successful irrigation system.
