Deranged Photography Contests - Bug Out - Ammophila hirsuta

Ammophila hirsuta

Greetings friends of Steemit and followers of #derangedphotography. Human beings sometimes live very busy and we do not realize many things that happen around us. There is a small universe of insects that live day by day with us and do extraordinary things. A few months ago I was able to capture with my camera something that I had never seen and that caught my attention. Near my house I saw an insect digging in the sand, I decided to stay to see what it was and, to my surprise, extraordinary things happened that I had never seen.

After researching I realized that this insect is an Ammophila hirsuta commonly known as a sapper wasp, sand wasp or wasp digger. The female works alone to build the nest, looks for the ideal place to dig after looking for her prey that is generally larger than her, repeatedly stings her nervous centers until paralysis occurs, the prey that will feed her larva remains alive for days, it transports it to the excavated nest, flying or crawling it if it is very heavy. Once there, it enters the nest where it deposits a small egg. If the prey is large enough to feed its larva, it will close the nest permanently, otherwise, it will repeat the operation as many times as necessary until the nest is suitably provisioned; then proceed to its permanent closure and depart, again, in search of a new place to build another nest. Each female can take care of about six nests that she inspects regularly.

Here is this video that I could record of this wonderful insect
