Depression is a Killer

in #depression6 years ago

Depression is a daily living experience for many people. Though this may sound awkward, but it has become a way of life for many. Behind the make-ups, beautiful appearances and smiles that people wear around us are souls suffering from depression, each having a different cause, a difference reason and a different excuse for being the way they are. Many people today are depressed because they feel they married the wrong persons, some others are because they thought they missed out on an opportunity of a lifetime, some more are because of lack and situations and circumstances that hits them. Some people are depressed because of the judgment they are placed on themselves especially when they did something horrible in the past or when they feel like everything if falling apart.

Things will go wrong in life, even in yours. They always do. Nobody is immune from a bad day, a bad relationship, a bad experience, a failing marriage, failing health etc. they just come uninvited – they always do. What you do and how you react when things go wrong speaks volume. When things go contrary to plans, it is either you put on a positive attitude or you complain and sink down the slope of vulnerability. Humanly speaking, it is easy to fall into a fretful state of mind when things go wrong and believe that you are the worst of men.  You are not alone in this feeling; we have had our share of it at one time or another. It is just like a nature’s call that we react/attend to compulsorily. Not mincing words, things will always go wrong. It could be the loss of a loved one, a job, a business deal, investment, health, self esteem, or even your mortgage, properties or wealth. It could be a sense of oppression or opposition; it could be self inflicted or circumstances encouraged. But whatever it is and however you feel justified to slip into depression, depression is a killer; why don’t you kill it before it kills you?

Whatever you think you are going through, so many people have gone through worse and they are still alive today, happy and healthy. When depression takes away your sense your gratitude, life becomes meaningless that you can throw it off with a pill, a rope or a jump. You life is like a book; you never know what ends it until you get there. On every page and lines of your book (life), you may not find every word (action) favourable, but if you give it time and remain patient, you will be shock at how glorious your life turns out despite the challenges and situation that you had to go through.

So many people are going through intense emotional, physical, spiritual, financial and other pains, and they are hiding it successfully behind fake smiles, make-up, and nice clothes and polite speeches that conceal a lot. Nigerians are happy people. Practically speaking, Nigerians should be more depressed for so many obvious reasons. For many reasons, one being the doggedness of Nigerians to life and happiness, Nigerians are termed in the line of a song by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti as ‘suffering and smiling’. Nigerians will always see the light at the end of the tunnel no matter what life throws at them and even when there is no visible light at all.

We can beat depression by focusing on what is right; depression has no right to take anyone of us, again!

Hello @ outhori5ed

I like the vision with which you see depression and the truth is that as you say it is hard to go through each one of those things, I think about how personal it is to rise up with each depressive fall because it is a fight with yourself it is as if your mind was your worst enemy that you have to overcome not with fists but with the change that we can do and the courage to accept the bad things that have happened and move forward
