A Tribe is the Best Antidepressant

in #depression7 years ago (edited)

I didn’t want to become those dramatic bloggers who wallows in emotional depression stories in order to rack up followers. Wallowing and cynicism are easy and don’t solve much.

I’ve been dealing with the fucker since what? I think 14 years old. You may be like, “No way a 14 year old can get depressed. There’s too young to know what to be depressed out.” If that’s you, fuck you. Moving on.

A life of wandering far and wide has brought me to the Tribe

After a decade and a half of having this bugger, I have found a powerful solution, oddly enough, in the cryptocurrency community. The solution, made so plain for me this year, is joining a tribe that supports you and makes real sense to you. No matter what tribe is in fashion or in the majority, you get so much more by sticking with a group you can be honest with and work with over the long haul.

I swear this has been more important to me than meds (which I still take) or the big wads of cash I threw at therapy (which I no long attend). Therapy was still beneficial, don’t get me wrong, but the ROI isn’t anything compared to a tribal community you fit in.

I have the belief that you should take advantage of every treatment available to you to get better. This thing is a hell of a fight and I don’t rely on one thing to stay healthy. Grab any weapon you given to you.

What a Tribe does for me

I’ve always gotten glimpses and taken advantage of the solution before I even had a name for it. With community groups, wellness groups, 12 step groups, a community of peers is the backbone of their solution. And I have received the more benefit for these than any one-on-one therapy.

My conclusion is that humans need each other. No matter how rich or powerful you get, you’ll completely lose your sanity (humanity) if you are stranded alone for too long. Don’t think that being special or unique is anything to brag about. That’s a quick way to pick ego fights that eventually gets you removed from groups. It’s much easier to say you made a mistake, sleep on it, and everyone has already forgotten about it the next day.

In an ideal Tribe, you are accepted when you say that you are messed up and make mistakes and repeat bad habits. You bear your humanity. Don’t act like you’re invisible to the human frailties and defects we all have to deal with. Wise, experienced tribe members will teach you better things if you admit you need it.

I plan to explore this more in my blog as I delve into the belly of the cryptocurrency community.
