The pendulum swings from one extreme to the other.
I've not weighed in on this before, the whole defund the police movement. Yes, there are a lot of corrupted and racist cops. They are people who come to a job with life experiences and personal agendas, some of whom just want control and power.
Maybe some others felt they didn't make enough money to risk their lives every day to go out and "serve and protect", while also often being unable to adequately feed their families. Many of them become easy marks for those in power who offered those extra under the table bucks. Plenty has been written and reported about corrupt cops. Some are just psychopaths to begin with. Some are just too weak to opt out of the scams. Human nature.
That said, I believe there are many who have chosen this profession, often as with all professions, handed down from one generation to the next, who are earnest and who actually want to "serve and protect".
Getting rid of bad cops, and the tribal nature of all organizations, is certainly a goal to be attained, although those are generally the last to be called out and gotten rid of. It's those left with earnest intent who face the front lines, and who most often lose their own lives in the process of "doing their duty".
The pendulum always seems to swing, from one extreme to the other, without a middle ground.
So, where do we go from here? Do we want a lawless society? Do we want to head back to the days of the wild, wild west? Maybe so? Did we just get bored? Or complacent? Or both? Either way, I think it's coming.
Just a bummer that I no longer have a horse!
