Deepity

Listening to Daniel Dennett on YouTube where he introduces the concept of Use Mention Error, a logical fallacy of "confusing the word used to describe a thing, with the thing itself. " Mistaking the finger pointing at the moon for the moon is the way the Zen fellas might put it.

Dennett talks about philosophical theology as a "pseudo-sophisticated mugs game" and I agree although I am constantly sucked into the project, at least on a personal level. He describes some research done on "non-believing clergy", clergy who no longer believe in a supernatural entity or power. He says they are in a pickle, caught in a tender trap, making a living pumping a product they no longer believe in, or as actual marketers might put it, they won't eat their own dog food.

I particularly liked his term "deepity" or a "proposition that seems to be profound because it is actually logically ill-formed.

Not to sure where I want to go with my Steemit blog but it might be fun to go after some deepities, general and personal. Seems like it might be a fairly rich vein.
