The FBI Vault Research Challenge

Our apologies to the diggers and researchers of Deep Dives for the long overdue post concluding the first FBI Vault Research Challenge. It's been a hectic couple of weeks in real life and online for many of us but happy to find some time in the busy schedule to announce the winners of the most recent Research Challenge.

You can view the original post, now 20 days old, here.

I'm sure many of you are well aware that this was not our most popular RC to date, with only four official entries. Nevertheless, those that continue to participate in Deep Dives keep producing unique and thought provoking pieces for the whole community to enjoy. Thank you to all those that made an entry and dove head first into the FBI Vault!

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication! We're building an archive of research here on the Steem blockchain and your work here is critical, unique and, we believe, invaluable.

Without further ado, let's introduce the winners of the 1st Deep Dives FBI Vault Research Challenge.

Winners

First Place Winner (SBD)

FBI Tattoo Recognition Database

by @palikari123

The existence of a large FBI database tracking individual tattoos is not something you hear the average person talking about in everyday conversation but it's a fascinating topic. It's just another example of the great lengths alphabet agencies and the government go in order to track citizens across the country. The ink under your skin, the good the bad and the ugly, are no longer solely a way for you to express who you are through art but they also provide law enforcement with unique identifiers for a large swath of people. @palikari123, what can we say? Another excellent bit of research on a topic that's certainly in the public consciousness these days as we speed towards a world filled with biometric data and questions of class and access. The example of K. Trentadue is also a stark illustration of what can happen when someone is falsely identified by their tatts. Congratulations once again!

Second Place Winner

UFOs and Aliens, Conspiracy or Fantasy

by @krnel

Once again, a Deep Dives regular has claimed top honours with an examination into the questions surrounding UFOs and what our governments know and could be keeping from us. Easily one of the most popular topics in conspiracy circles for decades is the Roswell case. The FBI Vault contains a Roswell doc from 1947 which states:

"an object purporting to be a flying disc was recovered near Roswell."

Yet it's another UFO related document from the Vault that has been the most popular and most viewed. This document is known as the Guy Hottel memo which details what an Air Force investigator had to say about the Roswell incident. You'll have to check out @krnel's post to find out ;)

Third Place Winner (SBD)

What can we learn from Social Networking Sites and FBI Employee Guidance

by @bifilarcoil

This Deep Dives entry explores the FBI's data collection from online social networking sites, chat apps and supposed encrypted messaging services that really leave us wondering if we have any privacy left at all in this digital age. This is @bifilarcoil's (whose username I can never quite remember how to spell without double checking) second entry to Deep Dives and second time making the top three! Congratulations on another interesting bit of research!

Next Up - Wikileaks

Wiki Hour Glass.jpg

In the next Deep Dives research challenge we will return our focus to the Wikileaks Archive for the third time.

Keep an eye out for the official research challenge announcement which we plan on posting in the coming days!

Better late than never guys:) Let's hope we get more entries next round!

That would be cool and with Assange's precarious situation at the moment it would be nice to showcase the a few leaks that serve to remind people of the important role WL plays in holding governments and corporations to account :)

I'm certain we'll have quite a few more people joining in for that reason alone!!!

Huge congratulations to all the winners and entrants .. I'm moving house so looking forward to catching up with everyone's work asap. Special shout to my friend (and winner) @palikari123 who is turning into a research machine .. respect brother!!

Many thanks and happy moving:)

Congratulations to the winners! Looking forward to this next Wikileaks challenge coming up.

Congratulations @palikari123 !

I hope many more people read the article after today. Anyone who has an artwork on the flesh should be aware of this, and aware of all the people who carry a copy of the same artwork. Don't get your tattoo where the average criminal also got it? Is that even an option?

What surprised me the most that there where no links to crossmatch who actually do the same work on face recognition. tax payers are paying for both expensive products that essentially work the same and spy on everyone of us.

I might celebrate by getting a tatt:)

Thanks! Congrats to the other winners as well! Were there only 3 entries?
