DD 8 Research Challenge | Human Trafficking

Welcome to a special edition of the Deep Dives Research Challenge. Up until now the challenges have focused on a specific archive and have been left wide-open for researchers to find their topics of interest. For this edition, we ask all contributors to direct their research towards the growing epidemic of human trafficking.

While the direction is narrowed to a single topic, the scope remains vast as human trafficking is an international problem with many dimensions. In addition, this challenge is not primarily focused on any particular archive and participants are encouraged to include any of the archives covered in previous editions along with their own sources.

Human trafficking encompasses the displacement of people through coercion, fraud and force. Particular areas of concern involve:

Sex Trafficking
Child Sex Trafficking
Child Soldiers
Organ Harvesting
Forced Labor
Immigration

Because human trafficking is such a wide ranging subject you can be sure there will be future deep dives on this topic. In future instalments, we'll narrow the scope to target a specific region or host a challenge on one of the above classifications.

Human Trafficking | Modern Day Slavery

Human Trafficking is now the third largest criminal enterprise in the world behind the drug trade and the illegal arms industry. It's now the fastest growing illicit industry connected to organized crime.

It's estimated that human trafficking generates upwards of $150 billion annually:

Sex Trafficking $99 Billion

Forced Labor $51 Billion

Determining the exact numbers of people who are trafficked worldwide is a daunting task and the numbers vary depending on the source. However, there's little doubt that human trafficking growing at an alarming rate and so too are the profits for smugglers and crime syndicates the world over.

Sources

We're certain that Wikileaks will be included in many searches and we'd like to offer you some assistance to get you started.

Of course, entering "Human Trafficking" into the search bar will produce a very large number of results. Therefore, we'd like to suggest filtering your searches by narrowing the time frame year/month/day, by adding keywords (ex: country of focus), or eliminating certain archives if they're not relevant to your search.

Trafficking in Persons Reports | TIP Reports

Pro-Tip: US government documents on human trafficking use the term "TIP reports" that are used to compile information on a wide range of countries which includes particular details on the issues face by each nation.

The US State Department also publishes an annual report on Trafficking in Persons which highlight the current issues, a 3-tier rating system, nations/regions of concern, and measures being taken in an effort to combat trafficking worldwide. The link below includes an index of State Department TIP reports from 2001-2018.

Global Slavery Index

Another useful link that provides information on specific regions and nations is the global slavery index.

This topic is VERY important! Especially to the indigenous communities of north america where oil pipeliner camps cause the largest amount of human trafficking in the USA. If you search my page for man camps you will find some posts I have written about this topic.

In Canada and across the USA human trafficking of native american children is also now more legally justified than it has been in decades after a case legalizing the removal of native children from their culture and language and placing them in the homes of caucasians. Often times foster parents abuse native children and encourage self loathing by forcing white man values on people of color.

Thanks for bringing such an important topic to the blockchain.

Thanks for dropping by! The residential school system for native children is one of Canada's darkest secrets and one that is rarely discussed in the history books. From what I understand it was a slow-motion systematic genocide program designed to destroy native families and erase cultures.

Now this one for sure you can count me in on, superb idea.

Fantastic! There's plenty of material to discover - I've spent many hours researching this topic on my own and I barely scratched the surface.
V

That sounds like we have a lot to discover then, superb.

And I would hazard a guess that now it is a specific topic, we may end up seeing a lot more competition/entries, fingers crossed.

Hope so! That would be great!

This has been a topic of interest for me since VOP found that child sex camp outside of Tucson 6 months ago. I may be tossing my hat in the ring this time. A great subject, thanks for pointing everyone in this direction. It is a larger problem than many realize, and closer to home as well. It isn't something happening only in far away lands.

Very good topic to pick, but sad and horrible as well. I think it will generate some good investigations.

I can get on this one by next week, I think I know who/what I want to research already.

Here's my entry posted this morning ;)

Montreal: Hotbed for Sex Trafficking, the Bankok of the West

A hugely difficult and massively important subject guys .. the scourge of our world and a societal sickness that most remain blinded to, indeed this is the first thing I mention to anyone extolling the virtues of open borders, retreat into idealism all you like .. but unfortunately this is the reality of the world that we live in!!

An interesting and worthwhile challenge/invitation by @deepdives. Keeping this topic in the public eye through research and reporting may help save some potential victims from experiencing a horrible fate in the hands of evil psychopaths.

Thanks for the contest! I think it will help in gaining more entries, having some direction as to what could be researched. I look forward to researching and reading entries!
