Straw Man Falacy
Discussing or debating is really an art that requires cunning, some even enjoy it. It basically consists of the participants exposing their ideas through arguments that differ from their opponents.
But there are certain tricks or traps called fallacias (Fraud in Latin) that we use to "win". Your mother has used them surely (They are experts), it is the favorite strategy of many politicians, surely you have used them without knowing and even me.
One of the simplest is the fallacy of the straw man. Is to refute an argument that our opponent never presented, may be exaggerating some things.
"It's easy to attack and shoot down a straw man"
Of course the victory is a complete farce, but while the opponent does not realize or the spectators is "valid".
A simple example:
A: Let's go eat something light, a sandwich or a salad.
B: Are you implying that I'm fat? I want a hamburger.
Person A only said that he wanted to eat something light, perhaps because he was not very hungry, but person B gave him a turn and drew a conclusion that person A never said ... (Someone had to sleep on the couch that night).
In what cases have you used it?
