Mugabe's death was announced by Zimbabwe’s current President, Emmerson Mnangagwa in a tweet.

“It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President… Robert Mugabe."

The president then described Mugabe as

“an icon of liberation and one who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people.”
