Have you ever played the game telephone? You know, the one where one person relays a message to the next, and by the time it reaches the last person, it should remain the same? In a way, you can think of data silos in the same way, except each person never communicates with the next. They sit in silence and no one knows what the other is saying. A data silo is a repository of fixed data that remains under the control of one department and is isolated from the rest of the organization.
Data Silos in Healthcare
Data silos are one of the biggest problems that plague the healthcare industry. In most cases when a patient visits a doctor, their information is taken on paper or put through the facilities EHR system (Electronic Health Record). Most EHR systems are completely isolated and do not communicate with the outside world. As a result, patients and providers have difficulties transferring over data, and unfortunately pieces or the entirety of health information are lost. Medical professionals realize the severity of this issue and in fact 72 percent stated that their preferred strategy for EHRs is to link disparate systems through messaging, APIs, web services and clinical portals.
