Pocket’s Mobile Vision

When I was first learning how to code, I knew next to nothing about how databases worked. As a new iOS developer, I was limited to simple card games and weather apps, since I could not store data on a server in the cloud.

Then I discovered Parse. All it took was one line of code and it opened up possibilities, such as allowing me to create the first version of a social network for people who love tequila. It was magical! The Parse Dashboard abstracted all the difficulty of managing a database for me. All I had to do was login and voila, all of it was there.

Pocket aims to be that same magical tool for mobile developers who wish to build peer to peer applications using any cryptocurrency. A mobile developer shouldn’t need to worry about coding their own wallet software, holding funds for their users, or running nodes for a given cryptocurrency. All of these things take significant time and knowledge of the software to build out and as a result we are not seeing the bull breadth of mobile applications that can be built.

Some applications that are possible right now, but have yet to be built are: :

  • A native game that rewards players in a true cryptocurrency instead of in-game gold or money
  • A blogging or music streaming app that directly pays writers and musicians directly
  • An augmented reality (AR) app that allows adventurers to find hidden tokenized objects based on clues created by others (e.g., geocaching on steroids)
  • An app that allows me to digitally sign writing and videos to prove its validity (portable Twitter check mark)

Part of the reason we have yet to see these applications is the difficulty and time investment required in creating the basic infrastructure for them. Developers should also have the ability to choose what blockchain is most useful for them and the application they want to build. Since Pocket is blockchain agnostic, developers will be choose any cryptocurrency they want to develop for.

Pocket’s core mission is to empower developers who want to build peer-to-peer applications. The more applications that use cryptocurrency (especially mobile), the more on-ramps and opportunities there are for people to interact with the new web. We see a world where someone’s first interaction with cryptocurrency is done in the context of an application they are actively using; people experience true utility and digital ownership of the asset they have earned.

Realizing that vision starts by building out that magical experience for developers. In the coming months, the team will be building an easy to use, open source iOS SDK that provides the required interfaces for mobile developers to easily create peer to peer apps. We will begin development on the Android and React Native versions later this year.

Like Parse, our dashboard will be the interface in which you can easily manage your new peer-to-peer application. While still in alpha, it is in active development and will continue to improve.

Developers can use this software to communicate with the Pocket Network protocol.
