Antes de que algún cubano venga a reclamar los derechos sobre la Salsa, voy a aclarar que yo sé muy bien que los ritmos de los cuales nació este movimiento provienen de Cuba, como es el caso del son, el guaguancó, la rumba y la guaracha. Una vez dicho esto tengo que decir que hace mucho tiempo que la salsa no le pertenece a la isla caribeña, porque la música que escuchamos hoy es el producto de muchas influencias, mezclas, cambios, nacionalidades, estilos y mucho más.

La misma palabra “Salsa” se utilizó en muchas canciones, pero obviamente no para referirse al género. Fue en el programa de radio de un venezolano, Phidias Danilo Escalona, donde por primera vez se empezó a utilizar esa palabra para hacer alusión a la música que se estaba tocando en el ambiente latino de los Estados Unidos. De una entrevista que le hacía Phidias a Richie Ray fue que surgió esa relación y de allí este artista quiso bautizar su siguiente disco con el nombre “Salsa” (1968). Este término también permitió colocar bajo un mismo techo todos los géneros latinos que tocaban: son, guaracha, bomba, plena, bolero, etc.

El sonido que se ha hecho universal nació en Nueva York y fue impulsado a través de un proyecto comercial conocido como “Fania”, del cual salió un sello disquero, organización de conciertos y management. Esta empresa fue fundada por Gennaro Masucci, mejor conocido como Jerry Masucci, un empresario y productor cinematográfico estadounidense y el dominicano Juan Azarías Pacheco Kiniping, conocido mundialmente como Johnny Pacheco "El Maestro".

Pacheco ha sido una de las personas más influyentes dentro del ambiente musical latino y es sin duda el responsable principal del sonido que tiene esta forma musical bailable actualmente. Destacó como músico (flautista), compositor, arreglista, director y productor. Sus composiciones han sido grabadas por los máximos representantes de la música latina como Celia Cruz (La dicha mia), Héctor Lavoe (El rey de la puntualidad), DLG (Acuyuyé), Marc Anthony (Mi gente) y muchos más. Cuenta con varias nominaciones al Grammy.
