Members of Mayday - Sonic Empire

After the reunification of Germany most of the old structures in East Germany have been closed down or restructured. This was also the case of the Radio DT64 - from the socialist event Deutschland Treff (Germany meeting) in 1964, which was not fitting into the program of the nation wide radio network. It was one of the first radio station to play tehcno in Germany. This was happening in the show Dancehall, where the DJin Marusha was the host.

To support the station against closing a party called Mayday was held on the 14th of December 1991 in Berlin. The idea came from DJ Dick (Fabian Lenz) and was supported by his brother one of the biggest techno DJs in Germany, Westbam (Maximilian Lenz).

The party was a succes with 5000 participants and despite that it not achieve it's purpose , was turned into a festival which was held between 1992-1996 twice a year and from 1996 till today only in spring.

From 1992 till 2014, the festival was acompanied by the project Members of Mayday, which was the collaboration between Westbam and the music producer Klaus Jankuhn. The project made for every Mayday event an anthem, Sonic Empire from 1997 which was presented at the start of the post, being the most famous one, being for 24 weeks on 1st place on the single charts, receiving also a gold record.

So every event had a motto and an anthem.

In 1992 the motto of the spring edition held in Köln was A New Chapter Of House And Techno and the anthem was named Mayday Anthem. It is worth mentioning as it was the first song by the project.

The 1992 winter edition was held back in Berlin with the motto and anthem having the same name: Forward ever Backward never

As there are many more editions, I will focus on the songs I like or are worth mentioning.

One is the winter edition of 1994 with the motto: The Raving Society (We are different) - Twin Mayday and the anthem We are different. It was called the Twin Mayday because the event on 26th of November has been sold out and the 25th was choosen to play the same sets due to the high demand.

I liked the anthem from the 1998 edition Save the Robots

And also the one from 1999 Soundtropolis

Hmm, as I see the next two years 2000 - Datapop and 2001 - 10 in 01 need to be put in this post as well, one I like and the other was a hit at that time:

In 2011 at the 20th Anniversary, there was a stage where only the DJs from the first years performed only with the back then available equipment. The anthem is called Twenty Young

The 2013 edition was the last where Members of Mayday have been present. In 2014 Westbam has quit the Mayday. Ironic the 2013 anthem is called Never stop

From 2014 till today the anthem was composed by The MAYDAY Masters which have been renamed to Friends of MAYDAY. Here is the song from the 25th Anniversary:

What was your favourite Mayday anthem? By the way MAYDAY is not coming from a day in may, but from MAYDAY which is used a a help cry and comes from the french M'aidez!
