Apsara crown

Today i want to introduce, our Cambodian Apsara crown!

Cambodian was almost destroyed by the Khmer Rouge and from bombing during the war.
Most teacher's got killed by the khmer rouge and only a few teachers could hide and has survived till these days.
These teachers are teaching now the young generation about our history of our royal dance.
And to be honest i'm very happy and glad about that. Because I saw many associations from different places around the world where Cambodian people's live and trying to preserve our Khmer dance culture art.
And let the young generation know about the history of our apsara dance.
At this moment, many tourist start to attract by our beautiful ancient city of Angkor Watt. Even Barrack Obama and his wife and other celebrities was there to visit Cambodia.
And when they visit Angkor Watt, they will see, not only Angkor Watt is the symbol of Cambodia but also the Apsara dancers.

There are different kind of crowns.
The main Apsara crown will have five points or tips, with two rows of spherical decorations.
And the other apsara will only have three points of tips and the rest will be the same.
For decoration you put real flowers in the crown close to your ear. The looks are like apsara pictured at the wall in Angkor Wat carving.

Apsara are mythical dancers who dance for the court.
And most of the dancers are from the royal family, people who have high function or people who can afford and have talents for dancing. The girls need also to have good looks as well.
The training session are also very hard and most of the girls are start to dance at young age so not everyone can do.
In Phnom Penh, we have a few Khmer Art dancing school.
And once in awhile there will be an auditions for the elite group. The group will be book in different kind of royal palaces or by other important ceremonies and the main dance will perform at Angkor Watt.
The main apsara character will also be chosen as the face of our Apsara for different programs or advertise.
Before they got picked by the teachers, they must all have to learn the sacred dance.
To earn your own crown and to pray for our ancestors. Because wearing a crown means you play as goddess and you need to act like her. And it's not something that you can play around with it.
That's why this is very important for the teachers and the dancers.
To do a little ceremonie before you dance the whole show.
There are many other crowns for royal style dance, it all depends of which roll of gods or goddess you played in a story of the dancers.
