Dailypetphotography Event || Ladybug
Have you ever wondered why these beautiful insects are called lady? Not all ladybugs are females so this is not the reason. This cute beetles (yes, ladybugs are in fact beetles, not bugs) have their name from Virgin Mary.
An old legend says that during the Middle Ages in Europe, swarms of aphids were ravaging the crops. The desperate farmers started to pray to Virgin Mary and soon the help came under the form of ladybugs. These insects are the natural remedy for aphids infestation. To honour the celestial help, the farmers named the little red wonders ladybugs.

we call them ladybirds.. they're not birds ! but they're also not bugs. a true bug is quite specific. the humble ladybird is a predatory beetle and it eats bugs (Aphids) in huge quantities. It's larval stage is even more voracious.
In the summer of 1977 UK, we had a Ladybird swarm and they were literally everywhere. I remember them being everywhere. So many in fact that I collected some and started breeding them in a tank. I studied them and took them to school and did a talk on them. There are many varieties with different numbers of spots. There are also black ones with green or yellow spots. One of my favourite insects !
They are exquisite. I love them especially for their aphids appetite. Quite helpful for my roses.
In Romania, young girls are watching very careful where the ladybugs are flying...apparently in that direction will find their soulmate. 🙂
their aphid appetite is quite something. it's nice to keep a hotel for ladybirds over the winter. something like this will encourage them to nest up over the cold months in your garden. I found hundreds of them nesting in between the fence posts !
