TOPIC:
A Passionate Defence!
BIBLE READING:
Acts 23: 1-11
Qs. 2,7. See Questions HERE.
DISCUSSION:
One would expect more discipline from mature groups like chief priests and the Sanhedrin. How wrong? From his first statement, it is obvious that Paul faced a tough defence. The High Priest ordered that they strike Paul! Paul angrily burst out, but apologised when rebuked by those around. Christians face provocations everywhere. However, this doesn't justify foul language, curses or improper remarks. What should we do when called to order?
Paul asserted that he was a Pharisee, which was his sect before conversion. This immediately split the group. What were the main points of their disagreement? How did this affect Paul's defence (vs. 8-10)? Facing civil and judicial authorities often requires wisdom, tact and caution. God used this to spare Paul from being "torn to pieces by them".
Read and memorize v. 11. What an encouragement! God personally stands near us in all situations! One would think God would release Paul so he can escape. Instead, God assured him, "you must also testify about me in Rome". God's overall plans were bigger than Paul's physical safety. After all, Paul had already been warned severally, and he still consented (Acts 9: 15-16; 20: 22-24; 21:4, 10-14, etc). Believers must beware of seeking personal welfare above Kingdom demands, even amidst suffering and death.
So:
When you are wrongly punished by the so called religious leaders, do you quit the stage or encourage yourself to finish your course like Paul in this text?
Prayer:
Have your way over my life, dear Lord. Not as I will, but as You will!
REMAIN BLESSED!
