Daily chicken and a homestead dilemma...

Well, @janton kept saying it, and I guess it finally happened!

Turkey is laying eggs!!!

Oh my goodness, look at them all! Nine by my count. And they're BIG! Now we have a dilemma...

Do we want eggs, or do we want chicks???

How do I tell if she's broody? Will she spend all her time on the eggs, or will she still go on about her normal chicken things? If she's broody, I'd love to see her babies all up and at em this spring. Oooooh!!! I'm so excited right now! We must have done something right!!! What a good feeling! Is this how you professional homesteaders feel always? THIS IS GREAT!!!

Sort:

CHICKS!!!! Yay. Well done! How exciting. Let her sit!!

She's not broody yet, so we collected them. The first one to go broody will be allowed to sit. I want some chicks, and talked Melissa into it as well by telling her we could sell them.

Just remember once they hatch, if it's real cold, they might not do well. Plus you get 50% roosters... :))

You know how to test eggs to make sure they are still edible, right?

Check if they float, right? Floating eggs are no bueno.

She turned out not to be broody yet, so we collected them. She was up and about, doing chicken things with the others. First girl to go broody gets to raise chicks. First roo to go broody gets eaten ;)

LOL! Eaten!

Floaters aren't good. Just thought if you had 9 eggs there, you might want to check them....

On that note though, I wonder if chicks born in the cold live to be more hardy than others... 🤔

Actually they probably put too much energy into surviving vs thriving and are small and less productive....

congratulations sir, wonderful news!
