Trump Will Win the Government Shutdown Staredown

in #daca7 years ago

Here's why I think so:

1.) When you strip away the Trump Derangement Syndrome of the MSM, Trump's low approval ratings and the Democrats' comparative fortunes aren't that different from the usual bounce-back that an out-of-power-party gets. He has more political capital than his enemies think he does.

2.) The out of power party tends to look the best as vague, blurry "Generic Democrats" or "Generic Republicans", but increased focus on particular people tends to worsen their fortunes: the 1994 GOP fortunes reversed when Gingrich's rise gave Democrats a figure to attack. I don't think Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, etc., are Obama or (Bill) Clinton-styled unifying figures with mainstream popularity. The more the public sees of them, the worse politically for the Democrats.

3.) I'm softer on DACA than a Republican voter probably would be, but in its essence, it is an amnesty for illegal immigrants and the fact that Democrats have chosen to shut down the government to the benefit of illegal immigrants doesn't seem like a winning message.

4.) The media doesn't really have a compelling counter-narrative to #3 unless it's a vague "Trump can't work with Democrats / can't lead" kind of thing. They might try to bury the narrative I advanced in #3 above, but reality is closer to it than any specific alternative they can proffer.

Sort:

Democrats would rather support illegal immigrants then the citizens of America.. its really that simple. American's democrats included should be outraged by the choices congress are making. We need to make a change!!
