Impending Cyclone Remal: Coastal Areas Bracing for Significant Impact

Cyclone Remal is approaching the region, and despite being of moderate size and strength, its potential for destruction is significant. Coastal residents should remain vigilant. Historical patterns indicate that even cyclones with lower wind speeds can cause severe tidal surges, breaching dams and inundating coastal areas with salty seawater. According to the Alipore Meteorological Office in Kolkata, Cyclone Remal is currently situated approximately 300 km from the coastlines of West Bengal and Bangladesh. It is tracking northeast, with projections indicating landfall in these regions. The cyclone's path is expected to affect Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, and move over the Khulna division in Bangladesh, eventually reaching Dhaka.

Satellite imagery analysis suggests that Cyclone Remal may cross the coast near Sagar Dwip in West Bengal and impact the Mongla seaport in Khulna, Bangladesh, shortly after Sunday evening. The cyclone’s center could experience wind speeds ranging from 135-140 km per hour, potentially intensifying before making landfall around midnight.

In anticipation of Cyclone Remal’s landfall, the region can expect extremely heavy rainfall and winds reaching 110-120 km per hour along the coastal areas and within the cyclone’s projected path. The cyclone is expected to weaken after causing significant damage and will eventually pass over Dhaka, dissipating thereafter.

A red alert has been issued for all coastal areas in West Bengal, including Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and East Midnapore. In Bangladesh, similar warnings have been extended to Mongla seaport, Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalkathi, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, and Patuakhali, with distress signal number 10 being displayed.
