RE: Evening ride to test Wickwerks Ultra wide chainring (Yesterdays post)
You finally got that chainring on your bike.
You have the widest possible gear range with a double. Only someone with a triple chain ring might have a wider gear selection. But it is rare to see road bikes with triples anymore. Heck even MTBs are going single.
What is a derailleur extension? Is it something to make your short cage derailleur work like a long cage, considering 32 is big. Can you share a pic please. Thanks
You can see the small back piece that the derailleur is connected to, that is the extension. A company named Wolftooth Components makes a few different models, the one I got is just a generic one.
And it does simulate a long cage derailleur, so instead of purchasing a new one which is like $85+, you can just get the extension for ~$10.
When a typical road bike derailleur is at full extension, it will hit the largest cog which is a 32. So the extension drops it a bit lower to accommodate the gap needed between the first jockey wheel and the cog.
Okay, thank you for this bit. I have wanted to go for a 32 but haven't only because i don't want to spend on a new derailleur. This will now have me sorted. Road bike can now go to the hills. Yay!
