Campus Wheelworks December History Ride
This was a ride to kick off winter riding (not winter yet) and the Great Winter Get Out, which I will get to in another post. Campus Wheelworksis a local bike shop that sponsers weekly rides in the summer, as well as a fall Cyclocross race and cross country skiing in the winter.
They offered a free bike breakfast at 10 consisting of pancakes and quiche. The ride began at 11 am. Our first stop was the former insane asylum, Buffalo State Hospital, which is now a restaurant and hotel. I forgot to take a photo. All our stops were outdoors only.
Next we rode to Forest Lawn Cemetery to visit the monument for Native American orator Red Jacket.
We then rode to the Freedom Wall, which is a public art exhibit commissioned by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
After this we rode to the Colored Musicians Club where the president, George Scott, saw us and decided to talk to us a bit about the place. I really want to check this place out soon.
Next we rode to the oldest fire boat in the world. It is still used today to fight fires near the water and to break up ice. It is even used internationally as Canada is right across the river.
We had a couple more stops at architectural sites but it was cold and I didn't get photos. We stopped at the oldest house in Buffalo. Actually I got a photo but that was in an app for the Great Winter Get Out. I'll post that later. We ended the ride back at Campus. They had more food for us as well as afternoon drinks. I had a Rumple Minze and hot cocoa. What a delicious combination.
