Showtime website now stealing your CPU

in #cybersecurity7 years ago (edited)

Should Showtime be blamed for this or is it hackers? The Showtime website is now stealing CPUs according to a report. Of course it is mining Monero which is one of the more anonymous cryptocurrencies. Because the responsible parties used Monero it will be very difficult if not impossible to ever track it back to the source.

This is likely going to become a trend where thousands of websites will mine with your CPU. If done legitimately the website should at least put up a notice telling the users of the site that the cost of using the site is this mining. For certain purposes I could even think this is a good funding mechanism such as for films. Informed consent is critical in these cases though and in this case it's theft of CPU cycles without any announcement. It may very well be legal but it's not ethical for companies to do it.
