Obsolete Currency 💵 Broken Banknote 1861 $10 Scottsdale, Virginia • $3 to $750!

in #currency5 years ago

Just wanted to share scans of my old $10 note from 1861 before I ship it off...

The paper itself is thinner than you can imagine so it has to remain in a protected sleeve. The steel engravings are amazing to look.. it’s just phenomenal as most of these notes are. This particular specimen has been in my possession for 45 years believe it or not. I paid $3 for it at Del’s Coin Shop in Norwalk, CT in about 1974. At that time there was very little collector interest in worn examples like this one.

But there comes a time when we must move on... and cash in.

So when I discovered that the note was somewhat rare I sold it to a specialist for $750. I was pleased with the return and really don’t miss it.. although I probably shoulda bought all the others that Del was selling back then! Ha! If I had had the cash maybe.. but I was just a kid.

What an amazing memory and investment!! Not many can say they invested $10 and got back $750

thanks! cost me only $3.. junky CSA and broken bank notes like this were always selling for under face value pre-1976 being things began to rise in value.

this particular note, being printed during the time of the Confederacy just five days after the Battle of Fort Sumter would have had no value at all by even 1863 or 64.. definitely had no value by 1865.

I had possessed the note for almost 1/3 of it's entire existence. I wonder even if it was ever spent at all..

Even better. I see where I saw the $10 earlier and made the mistake. Those kinds of deals come along once maybe twice in a lifetime.

Congratulations @dddonnna! You received a personal award!
