CURIOUS FACTS CONTEST #7: The most expensive cheese in the World

There are all sorts of cheeses and they are produced all over the World. Cheese can be cheap and expensive good and bad. One of the most expensive cheeses is made of donkey milk, and yes you read right. I will repeat my self Donkey milk.

This curious fact brings us to Serbia a country in south-east Europ to be precise in the Balkans. One man found the secret to making cheese out of donkey milk. The man goes by the name Slobodan Simić and he started a donkey farm 16 years ago in Zasavice Serbia. He started with around 10 donkeys and his herd grew to over 300.

Why is it expensive and why didn't I hear of this before you ask? Well, the cheese produced from donkey milk is extremely rare and when thinks are rare they usually get expensive. Furthermore, one donkey gives a small amount of milk compared to a cow and only in the case a foal is born.

Another reason is that it is extremely difficult to make the cheese from donkey milk because it has a small amount of casein which is crucial for the milk to coagulate. All this makes the production of donkey cheese a long and difficult process adding to its value. For now, the only place in the world to get donkey milk cheese is Serbia.

The price went up as the Serbian tennis player Novak Đoković bought up the yearly production of the donkey milk cheese for his restaurants. The cheese is sold for 500 to 700 USD a pound or 205 SBD at the current exchange rate.
