CURIOUS FACTS CONTEST #7 - Which Came first? The Egg or the Chicken?

People have been asking this question for thousands of years. It sounded funny, still does, but when you come to think about it, you realize it is not some trivial question. It was more of a philosophical question in our history, but thanks to science we managed to figure that out!
“It’s a charming problem because you want to dismiss it as a stupid question,” says Roy Sorensen, a philosopher at Washington University in St. Louis. Even though we are more and more impatient with a question, it shows there is a desire in people that we finally need to resolve.
The oldest fossils of dinosaur eggs are approx 190 million years old. Archaeopteryx (the oldest generally accepted birds) fossils dated from 150 million years are proof that birds in general came after eggs in general.

When you narrow it down to chickens and egg from which they emerged we can say that eggs came first. But how? At some point in history, some almost-chicken animal laid an egg. Little did the creature know, due to a small mutation that happened in the egg, the 'baby' was born different from its parents. Even though it would take many years to notice the difference, the egg was different enough to become the ancestor of a new species.

Are you sure :) It is still unsolved question:)
Good post!
No, it is solved ;).. Researchers thought that chicken was first because the particular protein, that's needed for shell formation, was only found in chicken ovaries. But with further investigation, they come to a conclusion that egg came first, as I described in my post.
Thanks northern bro for stopping by :) :)
No! It is not solved! If you look at human for instance, we grow from infant to adult. According to the creation story, we were created! The same can be said the chicken. It could have been created! It is possible male and female were created and they later laid the egg. This particular question will be very hard to solve. Any attempt t solve it will open another discourse! This is the beauty of philosophy.
I am @smyle the philosopher.
''...according to the creation story''...
Well according to other stories we were not... So...
I am not here about the personal stories and beliefs. I wanted to share what we researched and what we know....
