There are many operating systems out there. People in different parts of the world use the ones they choose. But, here in Africa, Windows OS is the most popular. So, i am going to show you a fact about Windows which many users do not know.

As a matter of fact, this is my entry for the curious facts contest nicely organized by @river-island

Alright. Its time to reveal the fact. Here it is.

You cannot create a folder named CON(all in uppercase) in windows. The reason is that CON is one of the reserved words used by the Operating System. There are still others like PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.

These reserved keywords are used by the Operating System to perform some tasks.. For examples, the Operating system uses these words to create folders from time to time and store data in them for tasks related to printing and other functions. So if Windows allowed you to create folders with these same keywords, it will create resource conflict and ambiguity; thereby disrupting the smooth running of the system.

This rule has a very long history dating back to when Microsoft introduced DOS. Since then, no change has been made to this naming convention and it remains to be seen if any would ever be made.
