RE: 🔎Curious Facts CONTEST#8: THE BIBLE ALREADY SAID THAT THE EARTH IS CIRCLE!

in #curiousfacts7 years ago

Let's pretend circle means sphere. What does it tell us? Whoever wrote this verse was convinced that the earth was a sphere. Is that remarkable? Not really, because he wasn't the only one and he couldn't prove it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eratosthenes :

Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth without leaving Egypt. He knew that at local noon on the summer solstice in Syene (modern Aswan, Egypt), the Sun was directly overhead. [...] He knew this because the shadow of someone looking down a deep well at that time in Syene blocked the reflection of the Sun on the water. He measured the Sun's angle of elevation at noon in Alexandria by using a vertical rod, known as a gnomon, and measuring the length of its shadow on the ground. Using the length of the rod, and the length of the shadow, as the legs of a triangle, he calculated the angle of the sun's rays. This turned out to be about 7°, or 1/50th the circumference of a circle. Taking the Earth as spherical, and knowing both the distance and direction of Syene, he concluded that the Earth's circumference was fifty times that distance.
His knowledge of the size of Egypt was founded on the work of many generations of surveying trips. Pharaonic bookkeepers gave a distance between Syene and Alexandria of 5,000 stadia [...] [T]he 184.8 m Italian stade became (300 years later) the most commonly accepted value for the length of the stade, which implies a circumference of 46,100 km, an error of 15%.

The book of Isaiah the verse that tells us that the earth is round circle or sphere is a prophecy.

Before somebody proves us that the earth is round circle or sphere, it is already written in the Bible.

WiKi? = What I know Is?

It's not a prophecy, because other people already knew/ guessed it (e.g. Plato). In the 15th century (almost) nobody believed in a flat earth. If wiki isn't reputable enough for you: https://doi.org/10.1007%2FBF00387726

So plato and even magellan in 15th century?

So when do you think the book of Isaiah written?

the book of Isaiah was written a long time ago. You can search it. It's B.C.

When do you think Plato was born? You can search it. It's 428 BCE. My point was that Magellan didn't need to prove anything, because everyone was already convinced.

Okay, just calculate the year BCE of Isaiah and plato :)

That's not possible, because we don't know exactly when it was written.

No, that's possible. There's a research when the book of Isaiah was written and even plato.
