Yes, oddly enough, the pregnancy between the hippocampi is carried by the father. But what does the mother do? She just limits herself to depositing her eggs in a tiny hole in the incubator bag that the male has in the front of the tail and then it will go away forever.

The male will fertilize the eggs and incubate them for a period of two months. As the embryos develop the incubator bag is enlarged giving the male a tender aspect of pregnancy.

When the moment of delivery arrives, the father's body is seized by convulsive movements and contracts intermittently. By successive push-ups and straightening, the seahorse begins to expel the offspring in isolation or in groups.

During the labor that lasts several hours and is very similar to a birth, several dozen babies will be seen. After the birth, the father abandons his children to their fate, but not before devouring some of them that are within their reach.
