I know most probably don't care about cancer but it's near and dear to me. Whether it be cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.. we are ALL susceptible to these disgusting diseases/cancers. NOW, what if you could help in the cure with your computer?
So yesterday why browsing online I came across something called CureCoin. This was created by some developers at Stanford School of Medicine! Basically they used the shared resources of computers to help process proteins. It's a new term for me, but something called folding.
What is FOLDING you ask? Well, here is the answer...
Proteins are biology's workhorses- its "nanomachines." Proteins help your body break down food into energy, regulate your moods, and fight disease. Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." While protein folding is critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology much of the process remains a mystery.
When proteins do not fold correctly (misfolding), there can be serious health consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, AIDS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many cancers.
If we better understand protein misfolding we can design drugs and therapies to combat these illnesses.
So what Stanford is doing is state of the art and something that you can be apart of now and be rewarded with!

CureCoin is independent from Stanford University's Folding@home software which can be downloaded and run anonymously or earn points on their network called PPD. Anyone with a PC, Mac or Android phone can join. CureCoin uses blockchain technology based on Bitcoin (and Peercoin) to reward ( protein folding research participants (who use CPUs and GPUs to simulate protein folding behaviour to help drug discovery). The rewards are based on user's PPD points out. Also, for the time being bitcoin miners can also participate since ~19% of the coin's rewards are set aside for SHA-256 miners to help secure the network. Holding CureCoin in your wallet also pays you Proof-of-Stake rewards, which works like interest, but also help secure the network independent of SHA-256 mining.
