In this post, @intelliguy addressed what we need to know about:
1- How to curate contents?
The easiest way to curate contents (or possibly the correct way) is to cast your vote on the contents you are curating.
You can say "Duh! This is a no brainer. That's what we all do here in steemit." True, but that is only part of the truth. If each steemian cast his/her votes on contents they think they are worth (without the underlining desire of gaining rewards). Then each steemians is a true curator
2- Why down-votes?
Down-voting contents is part of curation as well and can even be considered as a duty that each steemian needs to fulfill (its not mandatory but essential). Hence, @intelliguy explains why down-voting is an important part of curation and what type of contents deserve down-votes.

As you may know, in the current era, the span of human concentration is about 3 sec. The reason behind this is that we are bombarded by so much useless information throughout the day which makes our brains keep humming and bumming to sort out all the garbage from the non-garbage, the long-term from the short-term....etc.
Unless you are having a resteem service, if you have too many resteemed posts on your page, then you are not doing yourself or others any favor (even if your resteems are coming from a good intentions)
Luckily for us, there are brilliant steemians around that know how to program things and make tools. @stoodkev, as one of those brilliant steemians, made us SteemPlus a tool to block resteemed posts from appearing on the page we are visiting, which makes our life easier to find the actual contents (if there are any)
Aren't we glad we have such brilliant people with us here? Many thanks to @stoodkev for making this useful cleaning tool
