Curation Report (Hardfork 19)

in #curation9 years ago (edited)

It's time for another curation report! Leading up to it, there was a lot of FUD about how HF19 was going to make things worse. I knew that the top posts were going to lose out a lot, and the low paying minnow voted ones were going to gain. However, I underestimated just how extreme this change is, and just how much of the reward pool the top posts and top voters were dominating. I made a pretty dramatic illustration earlier this week, and this change is indeed that significant.

The result of the hardfork is well known by now. In a nutshell the top authors will see massive pay cuts of hundreds / thousands of dollars. A fellow witness pointed out that some $2,600 posts have now gone down to $1,200. At the same time, minnow votes will gain a significant boost. I've seen a $0.10 comment go up to $1.20. I've been resteeming some great posts by undiscovered authors, and previously my trail was only able to offer $8-$20. Their pending payouts have now been bumped up to $50-$200. I'm under no illusions that this will go down once the whale start voting again, but this is still an incredible bump from pre-experiment days.

There's some instability right now as post-HF19 votes seem to be even more overvalued. I don't know why that is, though it could stabilize as the day goes on.

All in all, HF19 is already a roaring success, pending resolution of that minor concern.

Voting power strategy

I'm going to vote at the same strengths. My target Voting power will be around 10% - it's already down under 40%. This is the best way to maximize my influence as each vote costs less as the VP decreases. The drawback is, of course, I'll never be able to give out a strong vote, but that's well worth the compromise. I shall count on fellow curators who follow my resteems to bump up the exceptional posts that deserve a stronger vote.

To all my trail followers, please be warned about this and adjust your following weights accordingly. If you share my vision of distributing votes to the most promising and engaging new / undiscovered authors, then be rest assured taking your VP as low as possible is beneficial to both your curation rewards and the community at large. As always, feel free to follow my Streemian trail.

Onwards to a fairer curation landscape!

Addendum: I will also follow votes by curators with low SP who share my vision of reaching out to new and undiscovered authors. Currently, I'm following @alcibiades' votes. This will further help spread my votes far and wide.

Sort:

Just after your previous curation report, I started to follow your upvotes (using steemian.com Curation trail) and I never regretted this.
I have also realized that if you are a serious curator, you should not worry too much about your voting power.

Thank you.

Thank you for your support. Much appreciated!

Appreciate your regular updates. I love it and frequently recommend it to others.

You have a very transparent approach there. :)

Now I wish to follow you on Streemian. Just curious what should I, as a follower, set my voting power to?

Ten percent will do?

Depends how much you value your voting power :) Yes, 10% should be a good compromise, won't affect your VP too much.

Thank you! You truly are a great curator, and I can't help but follow you on Streemian!

Appreciate your commitment!

First of all I want to thank you for resteeming some of my posts! The instant shot up from you is amazing!

I think overall the fork will work out nicely, however a few more improvements should come to steemit, but we will see those in the future.

Cheers! Keep up the good work. There are a lot of improvements coming in the next 6 months or so. Next up is Subcommunities, which will be somewhat like subreddits on Reddit. That'll be another paradigm shift. Other things like mobile apps are also in the works.

I was experimenting with vote %'s on your post and then got an error message that I'd changed it too many times. So here's my $25 vote on your comment. Very helpful post. :)

Ah, OK! Yeah, I think there's a limit of 3 for changing votes, though I don't know if it's time limited.

Maybe you can vote for some of the other newbies commenting, help bump this post up hot :)

Thank you @liberosist for this post, and all the work you are doing for this community, including helping the undervalued posts. Super!

I think nobody should be sad that posts of 1000s of dollars are cut in half, while many quality posts go through the platform with a few cents. I'm curious to learn how the high value post authors do think. We may see some of their comments in posts. I hope they are ok with what they see happening, since I think for as it looks right now, this change is good for the community. Just after the HF I saw my vote value increased with a factor of 20! Ok, part to do with the factor 4 increase of vote power with 100%. Interesting to see what the influence of the whales wil be who did not vote for last months, or at least not with full power. That impact maybe not that dramatic though, since I have the feel many of the Whales were using up their vote power each single day, more high power votes last month and more and distribution of their vote power through delegation and bot voting. Interesting times ahead of us :)

I won't blame any of the top authors if they are upset, but they'll appreciate how this is best for the platform. Like I mentioned, there may be something else at play here, the votes seem unusually strong!

Interesting indeed what happened with the vote in $. Before HF19 my vote was worth 8ct, after the HF19 it jumped to 65ct. That is a factor of more than 8. That I didn't expect at all. BUT with vote curve now linear and before to the square, this maybe the outcome. Only the coming days, week or maybe even more will tell how the platform will settle itself.

One of my post made it to $1000 pre-hardfork19. It was my first time. So everyone I know went crazy because I hit the 4-figure mark so soon.

So many congrats and applauses and taunts.

And now? :D

Post is well under $1000.

Not at all upset.

In fact, happy...

As I will go back and find those dudes that thought so highly of me.

And show them my numbers.

Hi and thank you for making this post. I am a minnow, very new to this. I kind of understand what this HF19 thing is and it seems like I will benefit from it, if i put in the work. To those that have made this possible thank you so much. I will honor what you have done for me and be the best steemian I can be. I have a lot of ideas and a burning desire to bring value to this platform.

Look forward to seeing more of your work!

Thank you for that, the atmosphere in steemit makes it easier to make content that's for sure.

You should have taken me up on the next week of delegation rental ;)

I know! That said, I'm glad I went for it the last week, despite a lot of people saying it was a ridiculous price to pay. It's definitely made my money back and more, while making tons of newbies happy.

While this may hit the higher post hard, those people I believe will still have great success as they often put out great content on a consistent basis.

This will greatly help out new individuals who put out great material! I'm sure there will be continued problems along the way but I like chances that we can continue to evolve and overcome any other issues that arise!

Today was a shocker when I opened my blog to see the value on my articles. It was so motivating that even though I have an exam tomorrow, I wrote another article. HF 19 is really gonna help us new users out.
However, recently, I have been noticing a lot of spammers posting garbage on steemit. That kinda put me off. It piles up on the new feed and because of that, people who work hard on their posts don't get much exposure to their posts. I hope that'll be rectified by putting stricter rules.
And finally, thank you so much for resteeming several posts of mine. That's the reason that kept me going! Cheers @liberosist :D

There's spam and garbage everywhere. If anything, Steemit has a surprisingly high proportion of decent content! Over time spammers realize no one votes for them and they go away. Either way, Subcommunities are coming soon, so you can simply follow communities you're interested in. Won't have to go through the New feed anymore :)

Its a self fullfilling system the bots will evantualy die out :)

That's great news! :D

Yessir! For me, still being pretty new, responsible curation is vitally important. It looks like my voting power has gone down considerably since the fork . . . and I haven't really been voting much more than before the fork. Either way, I'm excited what the future hold for all of us here.
Steem on!

Off topic warning ⚠️ @liberosist thanks for the support. You have really encouraged me and a handful of others.👍🏼
