An Open Letter To The 147 Steemians Following Me
Hey! How's It Going?
Thank you for following me. I know 147 isn't a milestone number, but I failed to say anything when the first 100 of you showed up, so I figured better late than never.
So, thank you.
Now To The Real Followers
Since roughly 10% of you will actually see this, I will direct the next part of this post to those who do. I'm not going to list any of you, since I don't want to miss anyone. You will know who you are, anyway.
Thank you for following me. I don't know why you do that—hopefully, you find value in what I contribute here. Some of you have said as much, and I appreciate that. It's nice to have validation outside of my own head.
You are the ones who consistently interact with me in some way. Be it through commenting, upvoting or a combination of the two, I appreciate it very much. You are the ones who are helping me to come back to Steemit every day and I hope that I've been reciprocating in some meaningful way. Any time I can come up with something semi-intelligent to say on your posts, I will. Frankly, there are some subjects I know very little about, so you might not find me interacting so much on those.
I will try to find other ways to return the favor, though, like heading to the comments you've made on other posts and seeing what I can help out with there.
I am trying to be a little more discerning with the rewards I control, but only to the point where I see value added. And I'm also trying to make my meager amount last, so I can actually give someone something for their post or comment.
Being a small minnow is better than being a plankton, but it's still pretty discouraging when it comes to the amounts you can leave. I don't think I'm ever going to be satisfied with that until I'm well into the mid-dolphin range. Who knows when that's going to happen, so I do what I can and press on.
And Now For Something Completely Different
Okay, I'm back to talking to all of you, even if 90% of you won't see this.
For what it's worth, and for the good of the order, I'm going to make a suggestion to all of you.
It's hard not to notice when I come to your main page to look for posts or comments to see how many people you are following. What you do here is up to you. You don't need my permission or my blessing. However, may I suggest to you that if you are following more than 1,000 people that you might not actually be following them?
I don't believe it's humanly possible to see that many posts. Since some of you are actually bots, that might not be a problem. For the rest of you who are human, you really should give yourself an opportunity to actually read and curate those who are adding value to Steemit.
I'm only following 26 right now. That's lower than I probably should, but I know now the number will never go above 100 (too many people with multiple posts a day along with resteems to properly curate over that). More likely, it will fall into the 40-60 range.
I can't tell you what to do, but if you're finding yourself unable to keep up with who you are following, or that you're really only curating a smaller group, maybe it's time to prune who you're following.
If that means unfollowing me, then so be it. I'd hate to lose you, but if you don't see what I post on a regular basis, or you've grown disenchanted with it, by all means, it's probably time to move on. I'd rather not have anyone following out of some feeling of obligation where there is none.
I don't follow because I want someone to follow me. If they do it, great. If they don't, that's fine, too. I follow because I'm consistently interested in what the person has to say, and because I feel what they contribute adds value, as well. I understand that's what Steemit was set up to do. I can be pretty nonconformist when it comes to things like this, but in this case, actually providing value and curating it from others is the rebel way.
Something To Look At
If you're ever interested in a quick breakdown of how many people your own followers are following, you can check out @umich's page. He built a bot that would specifically spit out the stats you see above on his post. When I checked earlier today, it was his last post, so it should be easy to find.
That's all I have. Thank you again. I wish you all well in all your Steemit endeavors and look forward to interacting with you for as long as you can stand me. :)
Peace out.
I follow you because:
Nice, I'm a top 1 :)
I'm not a bot either, so I got that going for me too :)
Well, I like you, too. :)
A for what I write being interesting—I'd settle for some of the time, or even part of the time. :)
Thanks for the list. You and I have had great conversations to date and I think that's how Steemit works best—when there's a conversation.
I went looking at the followers and right at the top of the list there's two accounts following over 250,000. They both have a -1 reputation score (go figure). One says it's a bot, the other is a little less forthcoming.
I don't think either account is doing anyone else any favors. Let alone themselves.
Haven't seen you around for a few days so I thought I'd try to let you know that my long awaited and anticipated February report was posted yesterday. :)
Hope all is well.
Ah cool, thanks man, I just been so busy with Steemcleaners, since they asked me to join them a couple weeks a go hence my steemit usage going down to almost nothing, because it's been full time.. haha. Going to the shop now but I'll look once I'm back :)
Cheers man! Not many people are really taking care and doing something meaningful for the community, and it’s refreshing to read something like this.
Keep coming with the suggestions since it’s not that easy to find relevant people.
Have a good one my steemian friend!
Thank you. I appreciate the sentiment, even though I'm not sure what I'm doing that is meaningful for the community. I feel fortunate anytime any of you who have decided to follow what I'm posting feels it's something worthy of interacting with.
It is hard to find a great many things here, relevance being one of them.
The post list I've made to keep track of ideas definitely includes more Steemit related topics, but I'm trying to spread those out. We'll see how successful I am. :)
👁 👂 U
Guilty as charged. I'm at 478.
But my wall is not my first choice to follow friends.
I tried SteemEngine and Steemfollower... not for me...
Now I did say a 1,000. I know I can't follow nearly that many myself but hey, maybe some can. I do know there are more people I need to start following and I will get to that. Maybe I should just follow you and some others around since you manage to find them all. :)
Steemstats has a lot of great information. I'm mainly on steemworld.org, but I probably should start looking at Steemstats for things I don't get there.
I took a look at Steemfollower again today. I get what they're trying to do, but voting for others keeps you at the top of the trending list? Having it capped at 35 I guess helps but otherwise, other than your SP, what's stopping you from upvoting for upvotes? Especially when they're jacked up a few hundred percent? I don't know. It's amazing all the effort going into workarounds when you should just be able to use the platform.
Pretty cool bot. Just got the results back.

Your top 5 are: @bbrewer, @dakini5d, @firstjabi, @hanafie, @nova-tv
Yes, steemworld is my goto page. Check it everytime I come to the computer...
BTW, If you see this quick enough, you (or anyone reading your post...) still have time (about 2 hours) to join my contest if you want...
i follow you, you were one of my first as well :) still support you my friend
Thank you. I'm really looking forward to seeing if any of your UI design features make it to Steemit. There's definitely a need for an updated, and frankly, more functional experience.
Sorry it has taken so long to reply to this. I've had it open in a tab, but I haven't been around much the last few days. I'm happy that I get to be one of your followers!
True that! Sometimes I think things are a good idea, but sometimes they need someone else to give constructive feedback.
Like you said about interaction, there is only so much that can be done, so we do the best we can and leave it at that. :)
I'm trying that bot you suggested. Curious to see what my followers' follower breakdown is. Thanks for the tip!
No worries. You were working on your own post. As it is, I realized too late that this might look like I was calling people out who had much better things to do then come join me on the post here.
It's adventure going through the follower list, though. There's advice running around here that you should reward them for following you. I don't need the nudge necessarily, because I am interested in seeing if a) I do want to follow back, and b) whether or not they're having good conversations somewhere else.
Except, I get in there and find bots following hundreds of thousands and then some humans trying to compete with that. A few are human spammers, and a few others haven't been seen for a while.
So, the breakdown made me curious as to what was going on with the followers, and now I'm not sure if even 10% is a good estimate of who's seeing my stuff regularly. When that's the main way posts are supposed to be seen, I understand why people use the shotgun approach and hope for at least a small percentage of human follow backs that actually don't have thousands to look after.
Hey, man, don't worry about it. Didn't feel called out. Just wanted to check out where you were at.
I have no inclination to reward my followers for following. Most of them aren't people. Instead, like in college, I reward participation, not attendance. If people comment on my posts, then I'll give them an upvote. If they follow and then never interact, there's no relationship. So no skilla!
Sorry, the tip is higher then your deposit.
You can check your balance by sending 0.001 SBD to @tipu with memo: balance
(the minimal tip is 0.1 SBD)
@tipu How do I stop this from replying every time I use that word in my comment?
You could misspell it maybe. Tipp. Tib. Or you could go to, "Thanks for the heads up." Unless you got something else that's going to appear when you do that. :)
Thanks for the AOIHVEWHIH!
Hi :) If this is a problem I can remove you from database so @tipU won't check your comments. Also if you won't use "!" char after tip, it will be OK too.
If you could remove me for now, that would be great. Thank you!
