Bumbac the calypso drum

This is a taste of the Caribbean. According to the author, not Hollywood depictions of the region, “of pirates looking for treasures or a wealthy man lying in a hammock under a coconut palm drinking piña colada.”

Aroz con Mango declares his intention is to hide behind the story of a percussion instrument, the Bumbac—that serves as a messenger of the Calypso Venezolano genre of music—and tell the story of the Venezuelan Caribbean.

The author explores the history of the Bumbac and the calypso music, a subject that has its abstract in the abhorrent slave trade that dates back to the 15th century. All while keeping his focus on the music.

He author takes us to meet Mr. José Gregorio Lugo (pictured above), an ingenious Bumbac maker reputable for building over 5,000 drums, walking us through the making of the Bumbac in today's Venezuela; and José's music group, Kaikó.

The final act of Aroz’s post features a young woman in Venezuela who, through her non-profit "Niños Cantores de Bellavista", is helping curb civil unrest and crimes among children, through a sustained teaching of musical workshops, and taking them away from the violence and mafias of Bellavista.

This is an excellent post, and features very good quality original photography to go with it. Enjoy.

Graveyard Kitarou, a short review

In this in-depth review @eaudebla offers a historical insight into the Japanese anime, GeGeGe no Kitaroum, and explores the journey of its creator, Shigeru Mizuki. The piece makes an interesting read for anime enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike, lending itself to education as readers will benefit from the author’s richly researched bytes of information about the old Kamishibai tradition and its evolution to manga, and ultimately anime.

@eaudebla’s blog is mostly dedicated to anime contents and the author rightly admits to have been interested in anime since being a kid.The contents fuse anime into another early interest of @eaudebla’s: history. “As I grow older, games, movies, anime don't excite me as much, so finding out about the creative process of a piece of work can keep me engaged with them a little longer.”

The World Nomad Games! The Olympics of Central Asia!

Next we travel to Cholpon-Ata, for nothing else but the “World Nomad Games.” I must confess I only just heard of this one. This post is a photojournal of the event, with its author highlighting some of the most notable games.

The World Nomad Games is dedicated to ethnic sports in the Central Asian region and started as recent as 2014. According for Richard Collet (writing for @traveltramp), “It's a mad display of Central Asian life, and of nomadic lifestyles.”

“Forget the Olympics,” Richard claims, “The World Nomad Games is the sporting event to go to!” If you want insane sporting events, look no further. Here Richard shares the most ridiculous sports that includes “dead goat polo on horses.” Yup, you heard that.

”Teams charge in on horses to pick up a headless dead goat carcass before attempting to race across the field to fling the carcass into a dead goat bin to score a goal.”

Yulk! Go read the rest for yourself. Richard spiced up his post with real good quality sport photos from the event.

Bandit Over and Out - Tribute and My Top 5 Burt Reynolds Films

Here Gene focuses his showcasing proficiency on Burt Reynold’s TV career. In this post the author shares his Top 5 Reynold films.

“While I wouldn't say I was his biggest fan,” Gene reckons, “I definitely liked him and a lot of the work that he did.” Of these works, Smokey And The Bandit is his clear favorite as it featured at number two, and its sequel, Smokey And The Bandit II (which the author ironically “liked more than the original in some ways”) makes it to #4 of the countdown list.

Preceding the countdown is a near comprehensive biography of Burt’s life in front of the camera, written in brilliant fashion.

Randomwandering got his Steem “break” with the publication of his epic chase scene list. Coincidentally one of the chase scenes from that list is from Reynold’s Smokey And The Bandit II. Gene blogs original fiction and film reviews, occasionally making exciting lists and countdowns like the one featured here. He also acts as a curator for Curie, and does a lot of weight lifting too on the operations side of things, including writing one of the two weekly author showcase posts.

How Shadow People Taught Me About Creativity

In this last one Autumn Christian explores the subject of fear in this personal reflection, seeking to understand what is a shadow person.

Autumn goes on to discus her experience with lucid dreaming, and her battle with fear. "Frivolity is our weapon against the darkness, against fear," she says. This is about dealing with fears and threats as a horror writer.

"The demons in dreams are a direct reflection of the kind of negative thoughts that can destroy us if we’re not careful. As a horror writer, you thrive in darkness, but you don’t allow yourself to become mired in it." - Autumn Christian

Thanks for continuing doing such an amazing job... and you found me an interesting article as I make art myself about shadow people based on sleep paralysis so I made a little discovery in the selection :)
Best wishes!

fantastic work.
