Popular Foods in the Philippines Other than Adobo

Talking about Philippines- aside from the beautiful beaches, its people, and culture- foods also attracts foreigners. For sure, majority of those who visited the Philippines are already familiar of the famous Adobo, which is even popular in other countries. However, there are lots of foods being popular in the country. Some may be authentic Filipino cuisines while others are acquired from colonizers and foreigners who stayed in the Philippines.

Here are some popular foods in the Philippines with the exception of Adobo.

Kare-Kare

This is one of the authentic Filipino cuisine which is popularly known for the thick sauce with peanuts giving a savory and delectable taste. Parts of the ingredients are different vegetables with either meat, oxtail, seafoods, etc. Some prefer purely veggies. It was partnered with alamang/bagoong or shrimp paste.

Pinakbet

Pinakbet is a popular Filipino vegetable dish which originated from Ilocos Region, which contains vegetables like squash, eggplant, okra (lady finger), bitter gourd, and others.

Lumpia

Lumpia traces of Chinese origin, but it was acquired and considered as a Filipino dish. Either meat or vegetable lumpia, both tastes great! The ingredients were wrapped with lumpia wrapper, then it was fried.

Nilasing na hipon (drunken shrimps)

This can be an appetizer, but can even be a main dish. It was called drunken shrimps or nilasing na hipon because it was marinated in liquor or a particular alcoholic drink. It was breaded in flour along with other seasonings, then it was fried.

Pancit

Pancit was never left off in any occasions here in the Philippines. There are different types of pancit, and it even varies in different provinces. The sample you se here is Bihon Guisado. Bihon is the noodle used here and it was stir fried.

Relyenong Bangus (Stuffed Milkfish)

Our province, Pangasinan, is the Bangus Capital of the World, and one of the dishes made with the mentioned fish is relyenong bangus. The fish meat was removed, de-boned, stuffed with different ingredients, then it was put back, and was fried.

Small Shrimp Omelette

We call this torta in the Philippines, but it was totally different from other countries. Small shrimps were mixed with flour, eggs, salt, and pepper, then it was fried. It was best consumed when it is newly fried because of the crispiness.

Bistek (Filipino Beef Steak)

Our own beef steak is different from the usual grilled steak from other countries. We call it bistek, and the main ingredient (of course) is beef (better in strips, soy sauce and liver spread for sauce, as well as calamansi and pepper. Onions can add flavor.

Lechon (Roasted Pig)

Lechon is of Spanish origin but it was acquired in the Philippines. It is very popular in different occasions too. But moderate eating this if you are hypertensive. Lechon was stuffed with seasons and herbs inside.

Sweet and Sour Fish

It depends what kind of fish you are going to use but this one is tilapia. The fish was fried, sauce was cooked separately which contains tomato sauce, pineapples, salt, and other condiments that can complement to its taste.

Halo-halo

Halo-halo is very popular in the Philippines during summer. You can put banana (saba), sweet potatoes, tapioca, melon, etc. Then put crushed ice on top, and top with ice cream if available. Surely, it will become a big business this season because it's already summer in the country.

Conclusion:
Philippines has lots to share, and foods are one of the highlights the country has to offer. The list above is not all-inclusive because there are heaps of dishes Philippines has. Do try these dishes if you go tl the country, or even try them in Filipino restaurants whichever country you are from.
