The Philippines' Sinulog-Santo Niño Festival
Philippine culture is greatly influenced by long periods of colonization. It is a historical fact that the country was first colonized by the Spaniards, who lorded it for over 330 years. Naturally, the Philippines and its people has adapted to the teachings and traditions brought by the Spaniards from their native land. Its greatest influence can be seen in our Religion.
Our ancestors were originally pagans, who worshiped gods and goddesses of nature. It was the Spaniards who introduced Christianity in our land. As you can see in the photos below, the oldest Churches in the country are of European designs.
Religious Festivals are also abundant in the Philippines and no other festival is more celebrated than the Sinulog-Santo Niño Festival.
It is an annual festival held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City, attracting over 1 million people from all over the Philippines to a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Santo Niño.
Highlights of the festival include the Grand Street Parade that lasts the whole day where participants are dressed in bright festive colors.
