"Sharad Purnima" is considered to be the harvest month in the Hindu Calendar. It is an important lunar day falling in the month of September - October. It indicates the end of Monsoon and begining of Winter. The day holds an important place among the follower of Vaishnavism and also in many Hindu family.

It is assumed to offer "Kheer" to full moon on this day and then having it on other day will get you many blessing. It is an age old tradition where, Kheer an Indian dessert made up of Rice, slowly cooked in Milk, and garnished with dry fruits were kept open at night in a safe place as an offering to Moon.

This year, Sharad Purnima happened yesterday on the full moon day.

This is a make shift arrangement I did last night. To keep it safe and out of reach from cats and other animal at night, we tied it in a playing kit. And properly wrapped it all around. We keep the upper lid exposed to Moon, so that the bowl get enough mist and chillness from Moon. We do cover it , to keep it more safe.

As per Hindu Astrology, the Moon is said to be the closest to the Earth on Sharad Purnima and is said to have healing powers. This way, the rays of the Moon heal our body and soul on this particular day.

The Moon rays which fall on the Rice Kheer are said to enrich it with many healing properties. The overnight moonlight exposed kheer were consumed next day.
I must say, the natural chillness is far better than refrigerated one. I have tasted both type of kheer but the one which is naturally cold tastes much better.

Many people also like to keep fast on this day. It is assumed that goddess Lakshmi showers her blessing for wealth and prosperity. And the kheer is distributed as Prasad. Many loves to keep them to their family and don't distribute it to others.

This is a shorter glimpse of an age old practice among the Hindu culture.
