When tablet, smart androids phones and gadgets are not yet ivented we used to play this customized bamboo toy " The Sulpot "

When I was young I learned how to make this toy made of bamboo " The Sulpot " armed with wet crumbled small piece rounded paper and put it in inside the bottom hole of bamboo. To operate this toy is like you are using a syringe the only difference you have to do it quickly with force. Then the inserted wet rounded paper will serve as the bullet.

Not enough to kill people ( LOL ) but it's enough for you to feel little pain when the ammo hits your skin on any part of your body.

Things needed to create SULPOT

• piece of long bamboo with 1/2 to 1 inch diameter
• bolo or any kind of knife
• hacksaw to avoid breaking the bamboo
• wet crumbled paper

Things to do

• Cut the bamboo stick in 12 inches long up to 15 inches to get the desired length enough to create perfect popping sound.
• Use the bamboo stick with small holes from 1/8 to 5/32 diameter
• The long stick should have hole both ends while the support only top hole to insert solid rounded stick
• potion the inserted support stick enough to enter the long bamboo stick
• The length of bamboo base is more likely the same with the insert support stick to push the rolled wet paper with 3 - 5mm allowance from the top of base bamboo.
• soften the top of support solid stick by simply beating it to hard surface like concrete
• soak the finished customize bamboo toy into the water to lubricate the hole.
• then you can put your paper bullet, the first inserted will served as ammo and the second will push the first inserted wet rolled paper.

To the place where I lived before we owned small bamboo field. Where we can get or cut small growing bamboos and make a " Sulpot ". I'm not sure for now if this kind of customized toy are still playing by some kids. As what I observed most of the kids now are enslaved in gadget games. No more in physical activities like street games such as tumbang preso, tagu-taguan, langit lupa, at patintero ( Filipino 90's Street games ). All these are no longer part of modern world because of the technology influences people.

More likely you can see this in some remote barrios or secluded areas away from what we called innovation/technology. They are not fully aware of changes or what is happening nowadays.

They have problem in transportation, electricity, tele communications and etc. Where most of the community experiencing these are kilometers away from the rural areas or very difficult to reach due to less support from the local Government. So there are possibilities that some urban kids playing this old toy.

As a person who is living in the latest generation I am very proud that I was able to experienced these things from my childhood. That I can share this stories to some children when I get old.

Technology changed everything and separates us from other activities. We are no longer healthy because of less physical workout and other curricular activities that might improve our stamina especially our health status.

As a guardian we should teach young ones that will promote health awareness. Because at the later part whatever would be the future of these kids we are the one who is responsible to that changes.
