Twickel Castle
Twickel, located at Delden, (Netherlands, Overijssel)
originally called Eysinc's House, was owned by Herman I of Twickelo in 1347.
The Eysinc, which has been owned by Twickelo's for many generations, was replaced in 1551 by a new house named by the owner, Goossen van Raesfelt, Twickel. Goossen married in 1837 with inheritance daughter Agnes van Twickelo, expanded the house significantly, including a south wing, adding the two Corinthian columns to the front with Adam and Eve and above the snake from paradise.
The estate would remain in possession of the Raesfelts until the end of the 17th century, after which it was once again acquired through the marriage of Adriana van Raesfelt with Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam, via female inheritance, by Wassenaer's marriage. This family occupied many positions in the diplomatic service of the former Republic and therefore lived in The Hague, where Twickel was used as a residence. Jacob van Wassenaer thoroughly cultivated the house.
A famous cousin of this genre is Unico van Wassenaer, who appeared to have composed the Concerti Armonici, discovered in 1980.
Unico's son Carel George was responsible for the construction of the Twickeler Speed in 1772 to better access the area for freight transport. Also from the eighteenth century, the two houses were built for the house, in which horse stables, coach house and storage space were created.
In 1831 it went well to the family of Heeckeren van Wassenaer, after the marriage between Marie Cornélie van Wassenaer and Jacob Derk van Heeckeren.
Until 1953, the estate would remain in possession of the Heeckerens with last count Rodolphe Fréderic who later married Marie Amélie Gravin of Aldenburg Bentinck. Rodolphe drove to the water in the park but found salt; the beginning of the Twentse salt winnings. He made water heating and central heating in the house as well as a completely new paneling.
Rodolphe died in 1936, in 1975 followed by his wife, who had housed Twickel in 1953 in the Twickel Foundation with the aim of maintaining the estate as a natural and cultural monument.
PRESENT DAY
With 4000 hectares, Twickel belongs to the largest private estates, with about 200 farms and homes, recognizable by their black and white shutters. Over the centuries, the park has been adapted by many famous garden and landscape architects (Marot, Zocher, Petzold, Poortman) over the centuries, with the most recent contemporary additions bridges, a view dome, a pavilion in the rose garden and new sight shades designed by Michael van Gessel.
The park also contains a deer camp and an orange grove in which a unique collection of citrus trees is housed in the winter and which summer is served as a tea-shop during summer.
The park is accessible through the estate store, which offers many products of the estate.
The house itself is opened for guided tours by appointment several times a year and, as requested by the last barones, is inhabited by a far family member and his family.
