Hmmm.. i think i would love to live in a community like that. Though the disadvantages you mentioned are on point, the advantages are cant be ignored too. Just like how you can leave your child with your neighbor without worrying a thing. :) And closing the road celebrating holidays together! That's beautiful. It's like a community of an extended family.
