Report: Building a GPU Mining Rig in 2017 (part 2) - ETH, ETC, DCR and more incoming!

Last month I told you about my first efforts to build a GPU mining rig for altcoins.

It took me a lot longer than I expected until everything was up and running flawlessly. I finished the rig about two weeks ago, but didn't find the time to post until now.

My efforts were mostly for fun and self-educational purposes, although if prices continue to rise like this, it might even be profitble to just mine ETH or ETC:

You can call me crazy, but I really enjoy using a manual drill for aluminium work.

I did a lot of testing before finally assembling everything together.

When everything was up and running I noticed I needed some airflow below the case, so I added these bumpers.

After two days (and nights) of testruns in my room I took everything down to the basement.

Unfortunatelly the company that had a great deal for the R9 Nanos only had two of them left in stock. So my plans to have at least 3 Nanos running couldn't be accomplished. Right now I am running 2x RX470 1x RX570 and 2x R9 Nanos.

Just for your information: I am mostly mining ETH+DCR right now. I do however intend to mine new cryptos that look promising if something interesting is released.
Also I consider swithing to ETC + SIA soon, both projects still have a lot of potential.

Let me know about your mining experiences.

Nice job on the build, glad to see you getting more into mining!

Yeah, it's kind of a strange hobby. Always tweaking and looking for better methods get a few extra hashes, a few less Watts, a better cooling etc. But I love it. Guess my neigbors are getting suspicious soon and wonder what makes that loud humming noise in the basement and why I am always checking in down there.
I plan to just tell them I got a server running down there for work or something. lol

What are you mining right now? Any interesting, not so famous ones?

Zcoin mostly because of the really low power usage on Nvidia and ETH/DCR on AMD cards. I am just adding a bit more to the Decred to my POS machine so I can stake on my own without the energy needed to mine it on a GPU. Setting up pos for Decred is a real pain in the you know what but worthwhile if you consider the rising energy costs to mine it now. I also sometimes spot mine orbitcoin because its a cool project that has been around for so long and its a pos coin as well.

Thanks for the info! Will take a look at orbitcoin when I find the time.
Yeah, I only poolmine my DCR holdings, our internet connection isn't the most stable either, so no masternode etc. for me.
I just switched to ETC and SIA with my miner. Took ages to finally find the right settings to mine it without the GPUs overheating too much.
Already planning my new Rig.
I was wondering, do you know if there are any drawbacks of using two PSU instead of just one more powerful one?

I will keep you guys posted on my Watt usage and mining results; be posting some more info soon, stay tuned!

Hey, I was actually checking out your homepage when I received this comment.
Thank you for your efforts, I think it's a cool idea.
I'd just prefere the dead-fish period to be a little longer, like 10 days maybe?
You should consider doing a poll on this.

Anyway, keep up the great work!

isn't it cheaper to buy get an asic miner?

I would be interested in mining but i am still checking if it worth it money wise and what hardware should i invest in

I think you are more flexible with a GPU miner. Also, nobody knows when new ASICS for BTC will come out and all the Antminer R9s might become unprofitable over night. I am far from beeing an expert. Definitly do a lot of research before investing. And probably stay away from "cloud mining". Most are simple ponzi schemes and only very few are legimate.
Mining with real hardware is not easily very profitable, unless you are planning on a huge operation with very low energy costs. You should view it more as a hobby I think.
Have fun.

Thanks for this man
That is useful information
So GPU miner is the best solution for the long run?

I think so, yes. Although nothing is certain, even GPU can be unprofitable if prices crash and/or difficulty increases a ton or any other unforseeable event happens.
I am uploading several posts about NVIDIA GTX mining builds right now, stay tuned!
