The way I did it was by trading ETH I bought at coinbase to the DEX at bitshares.org . So set up an account there, send ETH or BTC to your wallet ETH/BTC wallet on DEX, then trade for BTS on the proper pairing.
Correct, with blocktrades you don't even need an account (but you can get one to keep track of transactions) so you just need your Bitshares wallet and steem account.
