China busts darknet World Cup gambling ring

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

According to the media the Chinese government just shut a large darkweb gambling ring:

  • Had taken bets for 10 billion Yuan ($1.5 billion USD)

  • Had been running for 6 months and took bets in bitcoin, litecoin, and ethereum,

  • Had a pyramid structure where you got commissions for referring friends, and over 8000 people did just that

  • over 300 000 accounts on site from all over the world

  • Over 500 arrests

  • several websites, mobile apps, and chat groups were taken down

Today's Viraldrome rant

I always hear from the MSM saying crypto is dead, but if crypto is dead why are all these people willing to use it to gamble? Crypto always has real world uses, just like this. Yeah this ring got busted, but sports wagering with crypto is only going to grow, I consider it a core use.

While Byteball seems to not work very well, (or at all the last time I checked) the idea behind it of smart contracts would allow you to wager against other users directly, cutting out the TOR sites and the Chinese mafia. Don't ignore gambling potential of crypto, it's huge. It will also adapt to laws and bans. Gambling with crypto will only grow, people who live in places gambling is banned love it..
