I think tipping could be a great addition to steemit. However, just like you I am not very knowledgable on the subject. If someone puts work into something and someone else wants to appreciate it out of their own pocket though then why stop them. I agree that it could also attract and retain users for the platform as it can greatly incentivize content creation and quality.
